Newberry Church of God HistoryThe Church of God in Newberry was
organized on June 11, 1939 by Rev. McAbee following
a two week revival. The revival was conducted by
Rev. Homer McSwain on Player Street just above the
Mollohan School. The Church was organized with five
charter members. Though small in number, the church
was spiritually strong and determined to move
forward for God.
After about six weeks the congregation moved
from their tent meetings to the Kinard building
located on McCary Street. For two years the church
continued to grow at this location and due to the
increase, the congregation would relocate to the
corner of Bouknight and Glenn Streets. Under the
leadership of Rev. J.W. Moore, and faithful men like
Ernest Bass and U.I. Frye, the church would grow
tremendously. Soon the small building located on
Bouknight Street would become too small to house the
large congregation. Seeing the potential for even
greater growth, the church purchased property
located on College Street with the intentions of
building a new church. In 1952, with Rev. Paul
Walker as pastor, the congregation would build a new
church on College Street with ample space for
continual growth.
The Newberry Church of God has seen many
changes over the years. The Church has been blessed
with the ability to purchase a pre-existing home
located adjacent to the property and in 1996 a new
sign was installed by Harvey and Brenda Griffin in
memory of their daughters Alpha and Martha Griffin.
The work that began in 1952, with thirty thousand
dollars, has grown into what we are blessed with
today. The Church is currently valued in excess of
three hundred thousand dollars and it is only
because of the hard work of our faithful members and
the Hand of God.
From 1939 until this present day, God has
been the Champion, the Deliverer, the Giver of
Victory and the incentive to proceed forward under
the guidance of the Holy Ghost. As the Newberry
Church of god continues to endeavor for the Kingdom,
we know that Jesus Christ our Lord will see us
through until His return.
